What is happiness anyway and how to define it? In my opinion, a good definition comes from Andrea Seitan, a U.C. Assistant professor of clinical psychiatry in Davis: the emotional state that people reach when they are balanced, satisfied, successful in their relationships and productive contributors to society. Of course, everyone is different, but after studying the science of happiness, several important contributors have emerged.
Gratitude According to Bob Emmons, U.C. Davis, psychologist and author of "Thank you !: How the new science of gratitude can make you happier", gratitude is a key element of happiness. Studies have shown that people who regularly express their gratitude through a "gratitude journal", a list of big and small things for which you are grateful, were more satisfied with their lives, more optimistic and with better physical health, than those who did not keep such a journal.
Genetics Happiness is possible for everyone, but genetics and the environment play an important role. Medication and therapy can help anger, depression, and other negative moods control your emotions. But, due to genetics, some people have a higher risk of emotional trauma than others.
Money. As for the old adage, "Money cannot buy happiness", some scientists say there is some truth in it. However, the link between income and happiness is positive, but only for a very small amount. Money buys less than you think. According to recent studies, money spent on other people and for good causes creates more happiness. Donating to the local food bank instead of buying a designer bag for yourself is a promising path to lasting happiness.
Relationships We all have an innate need to belong, to be part of a group and to be accepted by others. And having many strong and supportive relationships is another key to long-term happiness.
Spirituality Research has shown that people who adopt a spiritual or religious practice have higher happiness rates. This may be due to social support, but the spiritual practice itself seems to provide resistance when it is going through difficult times.
So, is there a magic formula for happiness? Probably not. But, these scientifically discovered elements can be incorporated today to make you happier. In general, get to know yourself, what makes you happy and how you can approach life in the most rewarding way. Once you know how to live your most creative life, research it and have fun along the way.
